Saving on School Supplies

It amazes me how much we spend every single year on school supplies...I mean, really, how many binders can a high school or junior high kid need? Here are some tips on saving yourself from purchasing an endless supply of pencils and rulers.
1. Try and see what you currently have
Pencils, erasers and all the other loose paper all get scattered after the end of last school year. The best way to see what to buy is to figure out exactly what you have. If you have multiple kids, ask them to find all the pencil crayons, rulers and calculators they have and put them in a nice box or container that you can purchase from Michaels arts store or Dollarama. Kids don't realize what's hidden in their drawers and where everything is placed. The bonus is you get to spend some quality time with the whole family doing the "School Supply Search". Once you have this down pat you can figure out what else is missing and plan accordingly prior to checking out Staples or Walmart.
2. Make sure your kids don't throw out useful binders and paper
At the end of last semester I saw an entire garbage filled with binders that were completely usable, none were broken, but all were in the trash! Make sure to let your kids know that at the end of every year they should place all their supplies in a "Supply Box" that can be pulled out at the start of the next semester.
3. Notebooks
Notebooks never get completed until the end...but how many are even filled up until half way through?! To save some trees and another trip for school supplies, rip out the front part of the notebook with the notes and keep the clean pages! Lot's of room for the next class starting up.
4. Don't purchase new high-costing markers or highlighters
Crayola and other companies all come out with new and improved stationary that kids just have to have. All the kids at school start catching on the trend and then what do you do? Remind your child of what's important and useful for them to use... those glitter glues and other crazy looking scissors can easily be replaced by cheaper and better quality "regular stuff".
